Leamability and Feedback

چکیده

Bohannon and Stanowicz (1988) have claimed that contrary to popular belief, children do receive negative evidence about the ungrammaticality of their utterances in the form of recasts, expansions, and repetitions. Bohannon and Stanowicz argue that given such negative evidence, learnability theory shows that natural languages can be learned and that there is no need to postulate innate knowledge based on such arguments. The present article establishes what exactly the claims oflearnability theory really entail, and demonstrates that because Bohannon and Stanowicz have shown only partial negative evidence, the results have no bearing on existing formal proofs of learnability; also, the learnability proofs proposed by Gold (1967) actually tell us very little about what may or may not be innate. Finally, it is pointed out that there are cases of language acquisition in which feedback does not appear to occur.

The Passive Student Is Really Weaker (a Parametrization Scheme for Classifying Models'of Learnability)

Abslract We present a systematic framework: for classifying, comparing and defining models of computadonalleamabili1y. Apart from the obvious 'uniformity' parameters we present a novel 'passiveness' notion that captures the difference between 'Guess and Test' learning algorithms and leamability notions for which consistency with the samples guaranlU3 success. We analyze known models in terms of...

Representing Knowledge in Learning Systems by Pseudo Boolean Functions

Concepts that can be expressed as solutions to multilinear pseudo boolean equations with a bounded degree are shown to be learnable in polynomial time from positive examples. This implies the leamability from positive examples of many families of boolean formulae by a unified algorithm. Some of these formulae were not previously known to be learnable, and some were known to be learnable by diff...

jProceedings of the Secondnt Technology Worksho on Neural Networks an _ Fuzzy Logic Volume I

We discuss recent theorems proving that artificial neural networks are capable of approximating an arbitrary mapping and its derivatives as accurately as desired. This fact forms the basis for further results establishing the leamability of the desired approximations, using results from non-parametric statistics. These results have potential applications in robotics, chaotic dynamics, control, ...

On Learning from Queries and Counterexamples in the Presence of Noise

Sakakibara, Y., On learning from queries and counterexamples in the presence of noise, Information Processing Letters 37 (1991) 279-284. Recently Angluin and Laird have introduced the classification noise process in the Valiant leamability model and proposed an interesting problem to explore the effect of noise in a situation that calls for queries as well as random sampling. In this paper, we ...

The Effect of Asynchronous versus Computer-mediated Corrective Feedback on the Correct Use of English Articles in an EFL Context

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of asynchronous computer-mediated versus conventional corrective feedback on learners' writing accuracy. Three groups of learners took part in the study: asynchronous feedback group, conventional feedback group, and a control group. Asynchronous feedback group students received explicit feedback on the targeted structure via e-mail, while...
